Waiting on Chase

Waiting on Chase

Laura and Josh are two of those people that you just consider yourself blessed to know.  Laura has this beautiful calm about her that is only occasionally interrupted by a sly twinkle in her eye for Josh.  And Josh is this bright and happy person with the energy of a child that I totally envy. They are expecting their first child Chase any day now.  What wonderful parents they are sure to be! We met out on Folly a few weeks ago for perfect sun and clouds.  We also got a good dose of wind that added some playful drama to Laura’s hair.  Even with the wild winds, they rocked their pictures and marked a moment in time that will forever be changed with the appearance of...
Boudoir on the beach

Boudoir on the beach

Really doesn’t sound very private, does it?  Oh, but it was.  Imagine a warm September morning around 6:30am on the remotest part of the island.  Just us and the pelicans.  And dolphins.  And two fishermen.  And a nasty swarm of black flies.  The fishermen didn’t bother us…they didn’t really even look in our direction.  (what’s up with that???)  The black flies still give me nightmares, though.  Hurricane Earl had passed off shore just a few days earlier.  These flies were supposedly blown in with the hurricane (according to Luke Wilson and Google).  Hundreds of bites later, I’m still glad we did this.  Miss “N” didn’t get bit quite so bad, so her pictures only needed the flies “photoshopped” out.  She has her wedding this weekend so our lips are sealed until she surprises her fiance on the wedding day with this book.  Don’t you just love imagining his surprise and delight?!  I hope she tells him how she roughed it like a supermodel in a SI swimsuit shoot.  : ) Keeping it PG for my sensitive viewers and for Miss “N”‘s...
A Rain Plan

A Rain Plan

It is September so we know there is a chance of rain.  I’ll step out and say it.  There’s always a chance of a hurricane, too.  But that doesn’t mean we should stay inside until Thanksgiving.  And luckily for me, Heather and Tim completely agree. Heather and Tim met me while I was in the midst of shooting a wedding last fall.  Maybe we didn’t actually meet.  It was more like they saw me in action and thankfully liked what they saw.  That’s a really great compliment.  And I have the honor of photographing their wedding this October. Tim is not terribly keen on being photographed.  He was most comfortable with his back to me.  But we made that work.  : )  And Heather knows just how to make him smile, too.  We started our walk with a few clouds forming overhead and within a few minutes it was sprinkling.  Heather and Tim had traveled in from out of town for this portrait session so rescheduling was not an option.  Donned in their finest (check out the heels!), you’d think rain might crash the party.  But Tim saw an opportunity to step in out of the rain for a cocktail.  I saw the opportunity for more photos…some of my favorites! Maybe it was the drink, maybe the rain, but Tim started relaxing just a little.  Next we scored an umbrella at the concierge desk at the Mills House. We must have walked at least a few blocks in the rain but it was a blast.  Heather and Tim are attorneys.  They describe themselves as routine and boring and other...
Some people just know how to party!

Some people just know how to party!

One of my favorite events this summer was a party thrown by one of Charleston’s most generous benefactors.  He will remain nameless at his request.  The pictures I am sharing are chosen specifically not to infringe on the privacy of those in attendance.  But let me assure you that they are Charleston’s most gracious and generous souls.  Hosts of people in our fair city are blessed by their good nature every year, and I am always so honored to be called in to photograph their events. The lawn on which I stood is nicer than most golf greens.  Wait, there was a private golf green just off to the side of the stage I believe.  And the views of the ocean and marsh were breathtaking from under the live oaks and palms from which romantic bare bulb strings stretched across the sky.  But the musical guests we were treated to had me pinching myself that I was being paid to be there.  A local favorite, Ronnie Johnson, opened the evening with his unique combination of beach and rootsy guitar notes.  He was followed by individual sets and duets by Edwin McCain and Darius Rucker, who call themselves good friends to our gracious host. Guests indulged in the finest food and drinks all evening while enjoying their own private concert on the lawn.  Some even took to dancing a bit. Fun, relaxed, and perfect in every way.  I’d love to go back and do it again! The gorgeous lighting for the party and on stage was all done by Todd at...
Kids + Sun + Ice Cream

Kids + Sun + Ice Cream

It’s been *ahem* awhile since I posted some of the sessions I’ve been working on.  Let’s just say it took me FOUR (4) tries to remember my administrator passcode.  Where to start……how about early August? It’s 10am and already way too hot to expect children to smile about very much.  These three precious children are pretty stoic most of the time anyway, so it took some Skittles and promises of ice cream to even get their attention away from thoughts of jumping into the fountain. Mom wanted a picture of their feet at an age where feet are pretty, picture-worthy and time stamps of fleeting youth. And here is the precocious Miss Riley….hot or cold, happy or sad, this is the expression I get. And here is Miss Peyton….busy as a bee!  I’m not sure she even knew I was there that day.  : ) Big brother Zane was a reluctant participant as you can see by his expression here.  Having two little sisters is hard on a boy! Ahhh, but look at the smile he saves for just one special person in his life…MOM!  She was standing behind me when I snapped this brief but gorgeous smile.  And just as sweet is the way Peyton adoringly gazed at big brother here. By now any local can see that we were at the oft visited Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston.  The pineapple fountain definitely gives any picture a “Charletson” stamp, and that is just what this family wanted. The children (and the grownups) were hot under the August sun and overbearing humidity.  Next stop ICE CREAM!!!  Yes, that actually did...
Jackson’s 1st Birthday

Jackson’s 1st Birthday

There is a part of my work that I didn’t anticipate 10 years ago when I began my photography business…and that is the friendships that would develop with the brides and grooms I have photographed.  They have blessed me with beautiful little additions to photograph throughout the years.  Jackson is one of those joyful little surprises.  His first birthday was something Amber and Justin wanted to be sure and document as well as they had their own love story.  In fact, he is a continuation of that love story.  Amber felt that Jackson would be most comfortable in his own environment, so we shot in their home and their backyard.  Jackson’s best time of day just happened to be the brightest time of day, but full sun didn’t keep him from showing off his baby blues.  Jackson’s energy, playful curiosity, and total infatuation with his mom and dad were easy to pick up on and so much fun to photograph....
Labor Day

Labor Day

Labor Day is one of the holidays I usually find labor, i.e. work, to do…or work finds me.  This year has been all about regaining balance.  Work can inevitably push out all that is truly important if you allow it to do so.  So while years past have seen me work through the holidays, this is not one of those years.  This is one of those weekends that seem meant to be spent at the beach.  The last big swim in the ocean before the water cools down.  The last Saturday that doesn’t have hockey games, soccer games, and of course, weddings scheduled.  Warm sun, cool wind, warm water…perfect! Each of my children (and husband) got busy doing their own favorite beach activities.  Kevin and Nathaniel surfed.  Gracie built sandcastles. Nicolas collected shells. The waves were pretty choppy given Hurricane Earl had passed through a few days earlier. My “good” equipment was at home for safe keeping, so these images aren’t what they could be or should be.  I’ve learned that any image of the fam is better than none, though. Shell hunting went very well today.  The beach was littered with all sorts of beauties.  But I also noticed that the landscape of the beach was vastly different from last week.  The storm did lots of remodeling. This was the first little starfish they found.  We walked a bit further and found the whole stretch of beach covered in dead starfish (sea stars) of all sizes.  This is the first time any of us had seen something like this on Folly Beach. This little rareity was a six-legged star!...
Lots of “firsts” today…

Lots of “firsts” today…

The first day of September, the first day of school for my daughter, the first fully functional day for my new website….I’m ridiculously excited!  I can smell autumn approaching and productivity on the horizon.  What a wonderful...
